Foreign workers seeking employment in Saudi Arabia will now undergo a skill test before being granted work. This change comes as part of the Skill Verification Program (SVP) that was launched in 2021. Although the program has not yet been implemented across all job types, it is being slowly expanded, with the first phase already in effect for selected sectors.
As of now, the skill test has been made mandatory for workers in 19 sectors, including:
- Plumbing
- Pipe fitting
- Building Electrician
- Automotive Electrician
- Welding
- Flame Cutting
- Underwater Welder
- Electrical Equipment Assembler
- Electrical Transformer Assembler
- Drilling Rig Electrician
- Electrical Panel Assembler
- Electrical Equipment Maintenance Worker
- Electric Cable Connectors
- Electrical Power Line Worker
- Electronic Switch Board Assembler
- Blacksmith
- Cooling Equipment Assembler
- Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Mechanics
This new system aims to ensure that workers are appropriately skilled for their jobs, improving productivity and work quality. The test will be taken under the verification program before Indian workers are appointed to these roles in Saudi Arabia.
