The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has announced that overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by Kuwait’s visa suspension will receive cash aid of P30,000 (approximately Dh1,900). This move is set to benefit a total of 815 OFWs who have been directly impacted by the ban.
Kuwait’s Visa Suspension
Earlier this month, Kuwait suspended all types of work and entry visas issued to Filipinos, citing violation of provisions in a bilateral agreement. The Philippine government later clarified that the suspension applies to all visas for first-time Filipino travelers to the Gulf country, including tourist, student, business, or employment visas. However, those with existing ‘Iqama’ or residence permits are not affected.
Efforts Towards Resolution and Future Support
Bilateral talks took place between the two nations on May 16-17, but no resolution has been confirmed yet. The Philippine government plans to work on a long-term solution to issues involving Filipinos working overseas in Kuwait. In a media interview, DMW secretary Toots Ople stated that the cash assistance aims to “offset some of the costs” that OFWs incurred to work in Kuwait. Out of the 815 affected OFWs, 514 were set to leave the country as experienced domestic workers. The DMW is also exploring providing livelihood and employment assistance to affected Filipinos.
