GulfHindi English Desk: In the current situation, there is no sign of a decrease in the continuously rising prices of tomatoes. Sanjay Gupta, the MD-CEO of National Commodity Management Services Ltd. (NCML), stated that due to weather instability and rainfall, new tomato crops are not being planted, resulting in spoilage of the old crops. As a result, the price of tomatoes could reach up to Rs 300 per kilogram in the coming months.
The increase in tomato prices is not limited to Bihar or other states in India. It is also affecting the border areas of Nepal, where people have started consuming Chinese tomatoes due to their lower prices. This rapid increase in tomato prices has led to an increase in tomato smuggling at the Indo-Nepal border.
The demand for Chinese tomatoes has also increased in Nepal due to their affordable prices. In the Rani Bazaar of Nepal, tomatoes are being sold as before, and the sale of Chinese food items in most hotels and restaurants in Nepal, which heavily rely on tomatoes, has increased significantly.
Thus, the rising prices of tomatoes in Indian regions are also impacting the tomato market in Nepal.
Country-wise tomato prices per kilogram are as follows:
👉India (estimated): Rs 300
👉Nepal (Chinese tomatoes): Rs 20
