In a devastating turn of events, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7 hit central Morocco late Friday night, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 296 lives. The tremor, which struck at 11:11 pm, has left the nation in mourning and the international community in shock.

Epicentre and Impact: The earthquake’s epicentre was pinpointed in the High Atlas Mountains, located approximately 71km (44 miles) south-west of the iconic city of Marrakesh. The tremors were felt across a vast region, with Marrakesh and its surrounding areas experiencing significant shaking.

The High Atlas Mountains, known for their picturesque landscapes and Berber villages, have now become the focal point of rescue and relief operations. Given the rugged terrain and the remoteness of some villages, rescue teams are facing challenges in reaching all affected areas.

Immediate Response: Emergency services were activated immediately, with rescue teams, medical personnel, and volunteers rushing to the affected regions. Hospitals in and around Marrakesh are on high alert, treating the injured and preparing for more casualties.

International Reactions: The international community has expressed its condolences and solidarity with Morocco in these trying times. Offers of aid and assistance have started pouring in from neighboring countries and global organizations.

A Nation in Mourning: As Morocco grapples with the aftermath of this calamity, the nation’s resilience is being tested. The Moroccan King has expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to support the affected communities.
