GulfHindi English Desk: The Indian government has introduced mandatory quality standards for bottles containing drinking water and lighters that produce sparks. The aim is to prevent the import of substandard products and promote domestic production of these items.
The Ministry of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued a notification on July 5th. Under these quality control orders (QCOs), production, sale/business, import, and stock of two items cannot be carried out without the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification.
Manufacturing, storage, and sale of non-BIS certified products are prohibited and considered an offense. For a first-time offense, there can be imprisonment for up to two years or a minimum fine of Rs 200,000. For subsequent offenses, the fine can be a minimum of Rs 500,000 and up to ten times the value of the goods or products.
According to DPIIT, the effectiveness of the quality control order will be implemented six months after the date of the notification. The goal of this step is to strengthen the quality environment in India and enhance public health and consumer safety.
In addition to these new regulations, the government has also imposed a ban on the import of cigarette lighters priced below Rs 20 last month. Most lighters are priced below Rs 5 per unit, and their entry into the market is being restricted.
