The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) in Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step in its efforts to recruit highly skilled workers from Sri Lanka. On Wednesday, the Ministry launched the Skill Verification Program (SVP) in Sri Lanka.

Testing Skills in Selected Professions

The external track of the program is currently in its first phase, which is being implemented under the Ministry’s Professional Accreditation Program. Five professions have been chosen for skill testing: plumber, electrician, refrigeration or air conditioning technician, automobile mechanic, and automobile electrician.

Expansion of the Skill Verification Program

Prior to its launch in Sri Lanka, the Skill Verification Program was introduced by the Ministry in three other countries: Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s efforts to effectively regulate the labor market by ensuring that skilled workers meet the required standards through the Skill Verification Program.

Enhancing Professional Workforce and Standards

The primary objective of the first phase of the Skill Verification Program (SVP) is to enhance the caliber of the professional workforce in the Saudi labor market. By verifying the abilities of workers in five out of the 23 selected professions, the program aims to raise the standard of professionalism in the Kingdom.

Increasing Productivity and Reducing Unskilled Labor Inflow

The implementation of the Skill Verification Program is expected to have a positive impact on productivity in the labor market. By confirming the essential capabilities of employees in targeted professions, the program aims to reduce the inflow of unskilled professional workers into the Kingdom’s labor market.

Two Tracks for Skill Verification

The Skill Verification Program operates through two tracks: internal and international. The first track, conducted in collaboration with regional testing facilities, evaluates the existing skill sets of professional workers within the Kingdom, ensuring they possess the required competencies.
