The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced the completion of four kilometers of viaduct construction on the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg corridor, marking a major milestone in the Phase 4 expansion.
Completion Amidst Challenges
This accomplishment is especially noteworthy as the project faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and issues obtaining tree-cutting clearances. The construction, which started amid the crisis, has successfully maintained the flow of traffic and is expected to be finished by March 2026.
The completed stretch of the elevated viaduct, connecting the Majlis Park and Bhalaswa Metro stations, is now ready for system contractors to begin track laying and traction work, including the erection of Over Head Electrification (OHE) masts.
Upcoming Milestones
Another milestone is imminent, with the viaduct structural work set to be finished up to Haiderpur Badli, pending the completion of a railway track crossing.
Moreover, DMRC has made significant strides on the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg Metro corridor. Last year, they finished constructing 2.2 kilometers of underground tunnels between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension. Earlier this week, another tunnel boring machine was deployed for work between Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash.
Monitoring and Safety Measures
Safety is paramount in these extensive underground operations. The tunnel boring machines are being closely monitored digitally by DMRC, considering the presence of old buildings overhead.
Phase 4 Expansion
The Phase 4 expansion of the Delhi Metro will add 65 kilometers of new lines across three different corridors. Of these, 28 kilometers will be underground, and the rest will be elevated. Additionally, 11 new interchange stations will be part of this expansion, significantly improving connectivity and commuting convenience for Delhi residents.
